Episode 20: How to Build Resilience to Prevent Burnout

 In this episode, I interview Elizabeth Grady, LCMHCS. NCC and a Board Certified Tele-Mental Health Professional (BC-TMH). Liz has been counseling adolescents and adults for more than fifteen years in the Triangle region of North Carolina. Liz has several years of experience providing distance counseling and supervision. Liz earned her master’s and doctorate degrees in Counseling from North Carolina State University (NCSU) and loves to share her passion for people with counseling students and professionals. In addition to counseling, Liz owns and operates a virtual counseling practice and offers EMDR, CBT and DBT informed treatment.

   She shared her burnout journey and how she overcame it.  Liz defines resilience and how it is an active process. She discusses how important it is to adapt ourselves to overcome.  She discusses ways to overcome resilience including looking at our attitude.

Some questions to ask yourself:  what area do you feel unsatisfied with? are you hopeful or hopeless? Are you optimistic or pessimistic and why?  How can you see the world through a more positive light? Look for optimistic people in your life and how do they keep in the positive.   What are the obstacles getting in my way and how can I take action? What do you have control over? 

  • Think about where to start 
  • Finding support with other providers, remind each other past successes
  • Reach out when you need help
  • Adapt attitude of hope, challenge negative thoughts and reframe
  • Set goals for change, short term steps
  • Take action by taking control of your life
  • Don’t feel like it? Do it anyway and the feelings will follow
